Tropical Fish Guide
Beginner: Fish Tank Tropical – Guide Needed?

Hi,
I have no experience in fish tanks or keeping aquariums.
I would like to have a tropical fish set-up and would like to know if anyone can give me any info on how to begin, what tanks best, fish to keep in it, types that mix well, and recommend any starter packs I can purchase (tank, pump etc…) Thanks, im from UK so please only UK websites to buy the tank setup from. thanks people!! 🙂

Well, seeing as you haven’t specified what types of fish you’re interested in, I’ll give you a general answer.

I recommend anything around 15-20g and above for beginners. Guppies, zebra danios, platies and corydora/otocinclus catfish are really the best for beginners. If you purchase a 20g tank, I recommend the following:

*3 guppies
*3 platies
*4 corydora or otocinclus catfish

(It would be best to get all male livebearers. Most females that are store-bought are already pregnant which will make it harder on a beginner like yourself).

or

*6 zebra danios or glofish or neon tetras
*4 corydora or otocinclus catfish or one candy stripe/zebra/clown pleco (4″ when fully grown)

or

*6 gold barbs or cherry barbs
*4 corydora or otocinclus catfish or one candy stripe/zebra/clown pleco (4″ when fully grown)

Check this site for more stocking options.

Also remember to cycle your tank prior to adding fish! I highly recommend you purchase a proper filter, and an adjustable heater set to 80F. It would be wise to purchase an air pump as well as live plants to keep your tank properly aerated to help your fish thrive.
